Craniosacral Therapy is a unique and special form of gentle, non-invasive hands-on therapy that follows the subtle movement of the fascia or connective tissue in the body. The practitioner will gently and lightly place (less than a nickel weight of pressure) his / her hands on areas of restriction in the cranial bones, fascia and anywhere in the body that facilitates the body to gently release fixations.
During the session, practitioner evaluates restrictions in movement from different parts of the body.
When there is area of restriction in the body, it will affect the normal, optimal function of the organs, lymph, hormonal, myofascial, and body system, and it may also cause pain in the body as well as lead to certain health problems. By freeing the restrictions both in the cranial bones and the fascia, the practitioner is able to assist the body to regain normal function of the fascia, organs systems, lymph, nervous system, hormonal balancing, myofascial, as well as Gastrointestinal system (digestive system).
In addition, Craniosacral Therapy is a holistic therapy focusing on the overall well-being of the person, which includes on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. It also involves trauma resolution work. One important principle in the Craniosacral therapy is that the body knows exactly how to heal itself, and the role of the practitioner is to facilitate and support the healing process.
The primary goal of Craniosacral session is not only to treat a disease or certain health problems, but also to maximize your overall health and well-being in a holistic way, including the harmonious health of mind, body, and soul.
What are fixations or restrictions and how do we get this in our body?
Fixations or restrictions can occur from many different processes , such as injuries, trauma (including birth trauma), accidents, surgeries that create scar tissues in the body. Scar tissue tends to be shorter and less flexible, and thus, less movement than original, healthy fascia. This being said that trauma, injuries, surgeries can alter the balance of the fascial network.
In additions, chemicals and inflammation processes can also alter the collagen substance causing muscle to become glued together, stickiness quality which is called adhesions. Adhesions cause those fascia, and collagen substance unable to slide across each other in order to work freely and independently. It may lead to fixations or restrictions in the body.
Birth trauma and enormous pressure during birth may also cause fixations in the fascial tissue.
What is the fascia that Craniosacral therapists work on?
Fascia is the connective tissue of the body that is derived from the third layer of cells in the embryonic development and it evolves becoming the entire system of connective tissues, bones, and muscles in the body. Fascia forms a transparent sheets and network of casings (just imagine like a spider web) surrounding every functional cell and unit of the body, virtually all cells to connect with the cell nuclei as well as DNA / RNA.
“Taken as a whole system, the connective tissues resembles a 3-D body stocking or a union suit with a place for everything in it” – Oshman
“By following fascial movement one can facilitate lasting change on a cellular and even gene level” – Keelman, Stanley from the book Emotional Anatomy.
Each muscle and organs are surrounded by fascia that allows each muscle to slide across one another with uninhibited movement.
What do people usually experience with Craniosacral Therapy?
Most people feel very relaxed and some even fall asleep. Some people may even feel the movement inside their bodies during the craniosacral session, and they describe it like they are floating on water. Some people may feel heat and tingling sensations as fixations / restrictions are released.
During Craniosacral session, patient feel very relaxed that most patient can tap into their subconscious and identify blocks to healing and belief patterns that are preventing them from total health. This is the very powerful and deep healing can take place. Many unresolved issues, including trauma, can be resolved with this therapy.
